Cans on the garage floor stay 15 degrees cooler than the top shelf

Plus the five staples worth doubling up on before the holiday grocery rush starts.

Issue #063 Wednesday, October 21, 2026 Survival Food

Heat rises, and the top shelf of your garage runs far hotter than the floor under it. Your canned food is aging at the speed of whichever shelf you happened to pick.

Today’s Skill

Low shelf, long life

Put a scrap board on the garage floor and stack your cans on it. Low air stays coolest, and the board keeps rust off the metal. Leave the high shelves for paper goods. Write the purchase month on every lid with a marker. Pull from the left, restock on the right. Keep three meals in that stack you can heat on a camp stove with no power.

On The Radar

The October grocery climb

October grocery buying climbs. Baking goods, canned pumpkin, broth, and cooking oil move fast, and gaps show up before Thanksgiving week. Shipping slows too. Do this now: pick five staples your family eats every week. Add one extra of each to every grocery trip until you hold two weeks of them. Store the extras low and dated.

The Drill

Pull every can off the garage shelf tonight

Today, pull every can out of the garage. Check each one for a bulging lid, rust along the seam, and dents on the rim. Anything suspect goes in the trash, not back on the shelf. Date the rest with a marker and restack them low, off the bare concrete. Then cook tonight’s dinner on your camp stove using only what came out of that pile.

Stay ready. Rise.
