A full 55 gallon drum weighs 460 pounds, and your floor knows it
Where bulk water belongs, plus the gutter job that has to happen this week.
Issue #062 Tuesday, October 20, 2026 Emergency Skills
A full 55 gallon drum of water weighs about 460 pounds. That is a loaded chest freezer parked on one square foot of floor, usually in a spot nobody checked first.
Today’s Skill
Heavy on the slab, light in your hands
Water is heavy. A 55 gallon drum lands at about 460 pounds, so keep bulk storage on a concrete slab or over a load bearing wall, never upstairs. Split the rest into seven gallon jugs you can actually carry. Then plan two ways to treat: a filter rated to 0.1 microns for daily use, and plain unscented bleach, eight drops per gallon, when the filter clogs or freezes.
On The Radar
Falling leaves, rising water
October drops the leaves and the first long rains show up right behind them. Clogged gutters dump water straight down the foundation, and a packed storm drain at the curb turns your street into a pond. Pull the gutters clear this week, extend downspouts six feet from the wall, and rake the grate in front of your house after every windy night.
The Drill
Move the water, run the backup
Tonight, carry fourteen gallons of stored water to the ground floor and set it where the slab carries the weight. Lift each jug once. If you cannot move it alone, the container is too big. Then pour one gallon and treat it with bleach, eight drops, thirty minutes. That is your second method, proven, not assumed.
Ready beats lucky.
