A window AC unit lifts out of the frame in under a minute
Plus the generator oil hour nobody tracks and a bin test that takes twenty minutes.
Issue #060 Sunday, October 18, 2026 Home Safety
A window air conditioner sits in its frame held by friction and two plastic tabs. From the outside it lifts out in under a minute and leaves a hole big enough to climb through.
3 Skills
1. Pin the sash, pull the unit
Walk outside and look at every ground floor window. A window AC unit holds in place with friction and two plastic tabs. Screw an L-bracket into the sash track above it, or pull the unit for the season. Add a dowel cut to length in every slider track. Aim one motion light at the gate, not the sky. Then text two neighbors so their numbers sit in your phone, and yours in theirs.
2. Twenty hours, not fifty
Pull the generator out and check the oil cold, before you start it. Most small engines want fresh oil every twenty running hours, and old oil is why they seize. Fill with fresh fuel and stabilizer, start it, then plug in a heater or two work lamps for twenty minutes. An unloaded run tells you almost nothing. Write the hours and the date on masking tape stuck to the housing.
3. Dump the bin, make a fail pile
Dump one gear bin on the floor and test every item that needs to work. Switch on each light. Pull the batteries out of anything stored with them loaded. Inflate the pad and leave it twenty minutes. Open the water filter and push clear water through. Anything that fails goes in a pile by the door, not back in the bin. Fix or replace it this week.
2 Threats On The Radar
1. The gas with no smell
October is when furnaces, space heaters, and wood stoves come back on, and carbon monoxide trouble arrives with them. The gas has no smell and no color. Put a CO alarm on every sleeping floor, press the test button, and swap the battery today. Alarms age out after seven to ten years, so check the date printed on the back. Replace anything older.
2. The quiet half of storm season
Hurricane season runs through the end of November, and the Gulf stays warm enough to feed late storms. The South also gets a second round of tornadoes in autumn, often at night. Dry offshore winds push fire in the West. Put shoes, a light, and a charged phone in a bag under your bed. Set your weather radio to alert and leave it plugged in.
The Drill
Lock yourself out tonight
After dark tonight, take a flashlight and walk the outside of your house. Try to open every ground floor window, the slider, the garage service door, and any window AC unit. Push, lift, and pull the way someone in a hurry would. Note what moves. Fix the easiest weak point before bed with a screw, a dowel, or a bracket. One fix counts.
Stay ready. Rise.
