Four gauze rolls handle the bleed a box of bandaids cannot

Pressure and a clock beat every adhesive strip you own, plus the October pharmacy squeeze.

Issue #047 Friday, October 2, 2026 Emergency Skills

A bandaid absorbs about a teaspoon of blood. A deep cut on a forearm can put out that much before you get the wrapper open.

Today’s Skill

Pack the wound, then press

A cut that soaks through a dressing does not need another dressing. It needs pressure. Put clean gauze right on the spot and push straight down with the heel of your hand. Hold ten full minutes by a clock with no peeking. For a deep gap in an arm or leg, pack gauze into the wound first, then press on top. Blood still flowing after ten minutes means you stop and get help moving.

On The Radar

Shut windows and thin pharmacy shelves

October packs people indoors. Classrooms are full, storm windows are down, and furnaces run for the first time since spring. Respiratory bugs move fast in that air. Fever reducers and children’s liquid medicine are the first things to empty out, and they empty out fast. Buy one spare bottle of adult and one of children’s now at normal price. Refill maintenance prescriptions a week early so a backorder never reaches you.

The Drill

Dump the kit, time the pressure

Tonight, empty your first aid kit onto the kitchen table. Count the gauze pads and rolls. If you have fewer than four rolls and six four-inch pads, write them on the shopping list before you go to bed. Then set a timer for ten minutes and hold firm pressure on your own forearm with a folded pad. Ten minutes feels much longer than you think. Learn that now, not later.

Stay ready. Rise.
