Twelve minutes of flame and a towel finishes the whole pot of rice

Peak storm week, a cooler full of towels, and one fuel canister that lasts.

Issue #041 Saturday, September 19, 2026 Survival Food

Rice hits a hard rolling boil in twelve minutes. The next forty it cooks itself under a towel with the burner off.

Today’s Skill

Twelve minutes of fuel, forty of coast

Bring rice, pasta, beans, or oats to a hard rolling boil for twelve minutes. Lid on tight, burner off. Wrap the whole pot in two thick towels and set it inside a closed cooler. Forty minutes later it is done. That trick stretches one small canister across a week of hot meals. Rotate the same way: hot-garage stock and dented cans get eaten first, new cans to the back, every trip.

On The Radar

Peak storm week, pumps and pipes

Mid September sits at the peak of hurricane season, and inland wind events run the same weeks. Outages here get measured in days. Water mains lose pressure when pump stations go dark, and gas stations cannot move fuel without power. Keep your tank above half starting now. Fill two jugs tonight and set a boil plan. Write your utility outage number on paper before the phone network gets crowded.

The Drill

Kitchen dark, pot wrapped, dinner served

Tonight, cook dinner with the kitchen power off. Boil one pot of rice or pasta twelve minutes on your camp stove, wrap it in towels inside a cooler, and walk away. Eat it forty minutes later. Weigh or shake the fuel canister before and after. That number is your real cooking reserve, not a guess.

Ready beats lucky. See you tomorrow.
