Your extinguisher gauge reads green and the powder is caked solid

Plus the September pharmacy squeeze and what to pull off the shelf first.

Issue #038 Wednesday, September 16, 2026 Emergency Gear

A dry chemical extinguisher that hangs in one spot for years packs its powder into a solid cake. The gauge still reads green the whole time.

Today’s Skill

Shake the can, read the gauge

Pull every extinguisher off its bracket. Needle in the green zone, pin in place, hose clear of grit and bugs. Turn the unit upside down and thump the bottom with your palm or a rubber mallet until you feel the powder shift and roll inside. Do that twice a year. Check the body for rust, dents, or a loose handle. Any of those and it gets replaced, not stored.

On The Radar

School bells and the first fevers

September puts kids back in classrooms and pushes the first wave of coughs and fevers into households. Pharmacy shelves thin out fast on fever reducers, cough drops, and test kits. Buy those now while the aisle is still full. Ask your pharmacist about flu shot timing for your family. Set a hand washing rule at the door and keep one sick person in one room.

The Drill

Every extinguisher, on the floor, today

Today, carry every extinguisher in the house, garage, and vehicles to one spot on the floor. Check each gauge, invert and thump each one, then write today’s date on a strip of tape stuck to the body. Hang them back so a person standing at the stove or the workbench can reach one in two steps.

Ready beats lucky.
