A 2,000 watt generator runs the fridge or the heater, not both

Plus the September fuel squeeze and why propane tanks get topped off now.

Issue #037 Tuesday, September 15, 2026 Emergency Gear

A 2,000 watt generator has roughly 1,600 watts of steady room. A refrigerator compressor can ask for more than 2,000 the second it kicks on.

Today’s Skill

Watts before you pull the cord

Generators list two numbers: starting watts and running watts. Running is the honest one. A fridge draws around 700 watts steady but can surge past 2,000 when the compressor kicks in. Add up only what you truly need: fridge, freezer, modem, a lamp, a fan. Keep the total under running watts, and stagger big loads so two motors never start at the same second.

On The Radar

Storm season meets fill-up season

September is the peak of hurricane season on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. One storm near the refineries and ports moves fuel and grocery prices far inland. Propane and heating fuel demand also climbs as the first cold fronts push south. Top off your propane tank now, and add one extra case of a staple you already eat to every shopping trip.

The Drill

Twenty minutes under real load

This week, roll the generator outside, well away from the house with the exhaust pointed away from doors and windows. Start it and run it twenty minutes with the refrigerator and one lamp plugged in through a heavy extension cord. Listen for the engine bogging when the compressor cycles. Then write your appliance wattages on tape and stick the list to the housing.

Ready beats lucky.
