Issue #023

A sprain wrap starts at the toes, not at the ankle joint

Plus the reason September fuel prices and pumps get tight even far inland.

Tuesday, September 1, 2026 · Emergency Skills

A sprained ankle swells hard for the first day, and a wrap started at the joint pushes that swelling down into the foot where it has nowhere to go. Most home kits hold gauze and tape and no elastic bandage at all.

Today’s Skill

Wrap from the toes up

Use an elastic bandage. Start at the base of the toes, overlap half the width on each pass, run a figure eight around the heel and ankle, and finish above the joint. Snug, not tight. Press a toenail and watch color return fast. Elevate the leg above heart level. Ice twenty on, twenty off. If the person cannot bear any weight or the joint looks crooked, that is a clinic visit, not a wrap job.

On The Radar

Peak storm weeks, and the fuel tanks feel it first

September carries the busiest stretch of the Atlantic hurricane season. Landfall does not have to be near you. Refineries and pipelines along the Gulf Coast feed stations far inland, and any shutdown there tightens supply for days. Keep every vehicle above half a tank all month. Fill two approved cans for the generator now, add stabilizer, and write the date on tape.

The Drill

One ankle, two minutes, today

Pull the elastic bandage out of your kit tonight. Wrap a family member’s ankle toes to shin in under two minutes, check toe color, then unwrap and do it again with your weaker hand. If you have no elastic bandage, add two to the shopping list before you go to bed. Then check the date on every pain reliever bottle in the kit and toss what is expired.
