Twenty minutes of cool water is the whole burn treatment
Plus the two August buying waves that strip the staple aisle bare.
Friday, August 14, 2026 · Emergency Skills
A bad burn keeps cooking after the heat source is gone. Cool running water for a full twenty minutes stops that, and ice makes it worse.
Today’s Skill
Cool water, clean cover, no ice
Hold a burn under cool running water for twenty minutes. No ice, no butter, no toothpaste. Cover loose with clean nonstick gauze. For bleeding, press hard with a folded cloth and hold ten minutes without peeking. Sprains want rest, a snug elastic wrap, and the limb raised. Burns on hands, face, or joints, or blood soaking through the cloth, means get professional help fast. Your own doctor sets the rules for your kit.
On The Radar
Storm watches and school lists, same cart
August runs two buying waves at once. School lists clear paper goods and shelf-stable snacks. A single coastal storm watch empties water, batteries, and canned protein in a day, hundreds of miles inland. Buy one extra of food you already eat on every normal trip. Aim for fourteen days of staples, mark dates, burn the oldest first, and never shop the week a warning drops.
The Drill
Count the pills, count the gauze
Tonight, dump your first aid supplies on the kitchen table. Count gauze pads, rolls of tape, and elastic wraps. Toss anything crusty or expired. Then count every prescription you take and write the refill date on an index card taped inside the cabinet door. Anything under two weeks of supply, call the pharmacy tomorrow morning. Fifteen minutes, start to finish.
Ready beats lucky. Rise.
