Light it, run it, tag it
Pull every fueled or powered item out on the driveway tonight. Light the stove and let it burn a full five minutes. Run each headlamp and lantern long enough to see the beam hold steady. Push water through the filter and watch the flow rate. Switch on the radio and scan the band. Anything that stutters gets masking tape, a note, and a fix date. Broken gear does not go back in the bin.

Dry ground moves and old pipes crack
August pushes the grid hardest in late afternoon, and one failed transformer takes a neighborhood dark for hours. Underground, dry shifting soil cracks aging water mains, and boil notices arrive with no warning. Store two gallons per person now. Find your main water shutoff and turn the valve to be sure it moves. Fill two jugs and freeze them so your cooler works the moment the power quits.
The Drill
Ten items, one hour, tonight
Do this tonight before bed. Pick ten items you would grab in an outage. Flashlight, lantern, headlamp, stove, fuel canister, filter, radio, battery bank, lighter, and one cable. Test each one for real function, not just a click. Write pass or fail on a strip of tape and stick it to the item. Set every failure by the door so it leaves the house tomorrow and comes back working.
