A filter clogs and a bottle of bleach loses its punch on the shelf. That is why one water method is never enough.

Filter first, then treat
Run cloudy water through a bandana or coffee filter first so grit does not clog your good filter. Then push it through a 0.1 micron hollow fiber filter. That handles bacteria and protozoa, not viruses. So treat the output as your second method: eight drops of plain unscented bleach per gallon, stir, wait thirty minutes. If it does not smell faintly of chlorine, repeat once.

August stacks tropical moisture on the Gulf and East Coast and monsoon storms across the Southwest. Both drop inches of rain in an hour. Dry washes and low road dips fill from a storm you cannot even see. Action: today, pick two routes out of your area that do not cross a low water crossing or creek bridge. Write them down. If water covers the road, turn around.
The Drill
Make one gallon drinkable two ways tonight
Tonight, grab two clean gallon jugs. Fill the first from the tap and run it through your filter. Time it. If it crawls, backflush the filter now instead of during a boil notice. Fill the second jug and treat it with eight drops of unscented bleach. Cap it, write today’s date on the side, and set it on the shelf.
