Alkaline cells leak in five years and eat a flashlight from the inside

Plus the two August shopping waves that hit the same shelves, and a 30 minute bin dump.

Tuesday, August 4, 2026 · Emergency Gear

Alkaline batteries left sitting inside a flashlight will leak. The crust welds the contacts shut, and the light is dead the night you finally reach for it.

Today’s Skill

Ten minutes on, every light you own

Pull every flashlight, headlamp, lantern and radio into one pile. Turn each one on and let it run ten minutes. Weak, yellow, or flickering means dead cells or corroded contacts. Scrape green crust off with a pencil eraser. Then pull the batteries out of anything you will not use this month and store them in a taped box beside the gear. Label each item with the size it takes.

On The Radar

August picks the shelves clean twice

August pulls hard on the same shelves twice. School supply and lunchbox buying strips one aisle while coastal storm warnings clear bottled water, batteries and canned goods from another. Thin household reserves feel that fast. Add one extra of a staple you already eat to every trip: rice, beans, oil, canned tomatoes, coffee. Keep small bills at home. Buy the shelf stable version of what your family will actually finish.

The Drill

Empty the gear bin onto the table tonight

Tonight, dump every bin and drawer that holds battery powered gear onto one table. Sort into three piles: works, needs cells, throw out. Fix the middle pile before bed. Trash the corroded junk instead of putting it back. Write the batteries you are short on a list and tape it inside the bin lid.
