Issue #001
There are 40 gallons of drinking water in your garage
Where your emergency water already is, the ten minute rule for bleeding, and the freezer trick that buys two days.
Tuesday, July 28, 2026 · Emergency Skills
Your water heater holds thirty to fifty gallons of clean water right now. Most people let it sit there unused through an entire outage and never know it was an option.
3 Skills
1. Press harder than feels right
Direct pressure stops most bleeding, but only if you commit to it. Use the heel of your hand, both arms locked, your body weight stacked over one spot. Ten full minutes. No peeking. Lifting the cloth to check restarts the clock and tears the clot you just built. A folded shirt works. Your hands work. Hesitation does not.
2. Trap the water you already have
Your water heater holds thirty to fifty gallons. Each toilet tank holds three more. The moment pressure drops or a boil notice goes out, close your main shutoff valve. That traps what is in your pipes and keeps bad city water from following it in. Drain the heater from the valve at its base into clean containers.
3. Eat in the right order
Work outward from the fridge and you lose almost nothing. Fridge first, finished inside four hours. Freezer next, which holds about two days if the door stays shut and the space stays packed. Shelf stable last. Fill the empty freezer space with water jugs today. Frozen jugs buy you hours of cold now and drinking water later.
2 Threats On The Radar
1. Peak hurricane season opens next week
Atlantic activity runs highest from August through October. If you are near the Gulf or the East Coast, drive your evacuation route this weekend so you know it in the dark and in the rain. Fill your tank before a storm gets a name, not after. Photograph your insurance papers and send them to someone out of state.
2. Late summer is when the grid gets pushed hardest
A blackout in July is not a winter outage with the lights off. It is a heat problem, and it turns dangerous fast for small kids and older neighbors. Charge your power banks tonight. Cool the house early in the morning, then close the blinds and keep them closed. Know one cool public building within walking distance.
The Drill
Find the valve before you need the valve
Locate your main water shutoff today. Turn it off, then turn it back on. If it is stuck, or you could not find it at all, that is your real assignment this week. Then find the drain valve at the base of your water heater. Give yourself five minutes for both. A valve you have never touched is a valve that will not turn.
That is it. Three skills, two threats, one drill. See you tomorrow.
