Sanitation Gets Urgent Fast
Food and flashlights get attention. Bathrooms often do not. That changes fast when water stops.
A short-term sanitation plan protects health and keeps the house calmer.
Store Flush Water
If the sewer system is working and water service is the issue, stored non-drinking water may help with flushing. Follow local guidance. Do not flush if officials say the sewer system is down.
Store some utility water in clearly marked containers. Keep it separate from drinking water.
Make A Backup Toilet
A sturdy bucket, heavy trash bags, and absorbent material can serve as a short-term backup. Keep toilet paper, wipes, gloves, and sanitizer nearby.
Seal waste carefully and follow local disposal rules. Do not dump waste where it can reach people, animals, or water.
Keep Hands Clean
Hand hygiene matters. Store soap, sanitizer, paper towels, and trash bags. A small handwashing station can be made with a water jug and catch basin.
Use drinking-safe water for hands when illness risk is high.
