Gear Needs Hands

Gear helps only when your hands know what to do. A packed bin can still fail if no one has opened it in years.

Skills are cheap. They also travel with you. If you know how to use a tool, you are better prepared with less weight.

Learn These First

Start with skills that solve common problems.

  • Turn off water, gas, and power safely
  • Tie two useful knots
  • Read a paper map
  • Clean and bandage a small cut
  • Cook a shelf-stable meal without power

These are not dramatic. That is why they work.

Practice In Normal Life

You do not need a special weekend. Practice while doing normal chores. Use a headlamp during one evening cleanup. Cook rice on an outdoor stove outside. Find your home on a paper map.

Short practice beats rare practice. Ten minutes repeated is better than a big plan you never start.

Test The Bin

Open your gear bin. Check batteries. Start the lantern. Try the radio. Look at medicine dates. Make sure gloves still fit.

If something is broken, remove it or fix it. Broken gear creates false confidence.

What To Do Today

Spend ten minutes learning one knot. Tie it five times.

Then teach it to someone else in the house.
