Build A No Power Evening Plan Before The Lights Fail
A calm plan for the first evening of an outage, covering light, food, phones, warmth, and family check-ins.

Make The First Hour Boring
The first hour of a power outage sets the tone. If everyone runs in different directions, small problems pile up. If the house knows the first steps, the evening stays calmer.
Pick one room as the main room. Put a lantern there. Gather phones, keys, medicines, and shoes. Check every person and pet before you worry about dinner.
Keep the fridge closed. Do not open the freezer to “check.” Cold air leaves fast. Tape a note to the door if kids are likely to forget.
Set The House Rules
Outage rules should be simple enough to say out loud.
- One light stays in the main room
- Phones go to low power mode
- One adult checks updates
- No candles unless an adult is watching
- Outside cooking gear stays outside
Write these rules on paper and keep them with your flashlights. Stress makes people forget obvious things.
Eat Without Making A Mess
Start with food that needs no heat. Crackers, peanut butter, canned fruit, trail mix, and ready meals are easy. Save cooking fuel for later if you can.
If you need to cook, use safe outdoor gear only. A grill, camp stove, or charcoal burner can make carbon monoxide. Do not bring it into a kitchen, garage, tent, or porch.
Use paper plates if you have them. Save water for drinking and hands.
Keep One Phone Strong
Pick one phone to protect. Turn it off or put it in airplane mode until needed. Use another phone for updates and texts.
Write down key numbers. Include family, neighbors, utility company, and local non-emergency lines. A dead phone should not erase your plan.
What To Do Today
Spend ten minutes making a no-power card. Write the first five steps your household should take when the lights go out.
Put the card near your flashlights.
